Background for the Copper Legion | ![]() |
| History of the Copper Legion Arising during the 21st Founding in M36.017, the Copper Legion was created by the Adeptus Mechanicus in part to survey unrecorded civilizations and their technologies of the Sagittarius Arm in the Milky Way. A main reason for Mars launching its own chapter was due to tensions in the Imperium during this time known as the Age of Apostasy, where the numerous factions of the Administratum secretly vied against each other to gain more power inside the Imperial government. The Copper Legion was mainly supported by the Magos Alchemys branch of the Adeptus Mechanicus, who believed that humankind would only survive through a blending of the essences of science (technology) and art (magic) thus creating a new amalgam known as the Lion. The Lion could them be used upon the Black Dragon (chaos) to create the Red Queen, who would be married to the White King (the Emperor). The offspring of the Red Queen and the White King, (the Stone) would then uplift humanity to a new Golden Age by replacing the Emperor.. Trained in the left brained skills of astrosurveying, xenobiology, geomorphology, and anthropology, along with the right brain pursuits of painting, aetherphotography, sculpture, and music, the Copper Legion was a unique fighting force trained to deal with and record and/or subjugate most types of planetary cultures encountered. Many of the other, more militaristic, chapters called the Copper Legion “Freaks and Geeks' due to their unique position in the Imperium and the uncharacteristic makeup of their training. Perhaps the taunting and petty infighting between the Copper Legion and the other marines planted the seeds of doubt and chaos in the mind of their original Primarch, Jekaz Bitumus Mallus. Beginning with the subdued agricultural and industrialized worlds near the Galactic Core around Terra they proceeded outward. The Copper Legion's ships, the Battleship Ray of Truth, the Battle Barge Amethyst, and their convoy of support cruisers and escorts leapfrogged outwards towards the more dangerous frontier areas of the Imperium closer to the Eye of Terror. Many worlds had their civilization's secrets recorded and stored for future study by the Copper Legion, but with knowledge came a price. Along the way, a number of the crew took wives from among the surveyed cultures, and this was encouraged by Primarch Mallus, who recognized the marriages as part of the marine's alchemal training and enlightenment. The Magos Alchemys had altered the gene seed of the Copper legion to allow procreation, but this was done in secret and against the wishes of many branches of the Administratum. The Despite the Inquisition's warnings, the chapter was slowly pulled ever closer to the Chaos Gods and away from the Emperor as they delved further towards the edge of the galaxy. The almost defected to chaos near Venusius III, a deathworld of which very little was known. Its position dangerously close to the Eye of Terror's influences intrigued Primarch Mallus into further study of the strange alien world and the effects of chaos upon the inhabitants. Much of the livable surface of the world was covered with a thick matting of intertwined tree-like growth inhabited by all manner of noxious plant-like creatures. The creatures formed large, highly evolved symbiotic collective groups which produced natural products for other collectives on the planet much like industrial plants on forge worlds. Astrosurveyors of looking over the system concluded that the entire planet was actually sentient and called for ground crews to begin further investigations. While the surveys took place, the Chaos God Tzeentch's plans were set in motion. The Eye of Terror blinked, and a minor warp storm blew over the system. Many of the astropaths in the convoy were killed outright by the raw blast of psychic energy, while the planet of Venusius III became corrupted and tainted by the winds of change. The entire planet now allied itself with the dark forces of Chaos and began to evolve into new bio-factory strains to create foul chaos armaments. Some scholars believe that Venusius III produces the dreaded Defiler. Aboard the Copper Legion's ships many of the crew were also tainted by the chaotic forces overflowing from both the warp storm and the demonic planet below. A few of the more technical minded people were swayed to the side of Tzeentch due to his knowledge of all things, while some of the more artistically minded were seduced by the sensations of Slaanesh. Many of the chapter's servators either died from horrible mutations, or were possessed by lesser daemons of Tzeentch. Due to their culture tolerance training and the close-nit relations of the Legion, no past members were executed or ex-communicated. The Copper Legion knew that the Inquisition would soon hunt them down for such acts, and so it was decided to delve even further into the Eye of Terror. The now-corrupted fleet was turn towards the Labrythine Nebula, a region of space known for its shifting warp energies and maze-like real space channels. By chance(?) the fleet came upon a uncharted system which they named Phillipeaux. A pink (class C5) star orbited by a small blue (class B2) sun at the center of the system warned the Astrosurveyors aboard that this area was already in the grip of chaos. Searching for planetary bodies, they found a class M planet surrounded by twenty three moons, drifting space hulks, and two large orbital stations. Primarch Mallus knew that he had found their new home, and quickly worked to secure the indigenous populations found on both the planet and the moons. Most of the cultures were beastmen and mutants who vowed to support the Copper Legion. Unknown to the Copper Legion the warp storms in this area caused time dialations. Five thousand years passed outside of the Eye without their knowledge. On orders from Primarch Mallus, half of the fleet was sent outwards to map the Labrythine Nebula, where they attempted to map the maze, while the other half stayed to research the Phillpeaux system. By the time the fleet exited the Nebula and entered Imperial Space things had changed. Some of the systems that were founded by the Copper Legion were now exterminatus, while others were fanatically loyal to the Emperor. A few, however, such as the forge world Icaria X, still supported the Legion. The Chaos fleet did not go unnoticed. Within a month an Imperial fleet intercepted them and engaged the Copper Legion twice. Crippled and hurting, the Chaos ships limped back to the Labrythine Nebula. Meanwhile, Primarch Mallus was convinced that the secret of the Red Queen would be found somewhere around Phillipeaux. Seaching the orbital stations, Mallus discovered crystals of great potential power. Teams of researchers set upon the looted gems, and discovered that they were energy generators. Named by the Copper Legion Warp Energy Conversion Crystals (WECC), the crystals were soon put to use in restoring some of the ancient hulks found in the Phillipeaux system. The WECCs, while powerful, were not what the Primarch was looking for, and more expeditions were called for to explore deeper into the orbital stations. Feeling that the research was not progressing fast enough, Primarch Mallus decided to explore the depths by himself. He has yet to return from this quest and in his stead his wife, Lady Xee Wyalru, and his son Cornelius Mallus rule the Copper Legion in his stead. The Copper Legion now works to lessen the grip of the Imperium upon many frontier planetary systems close to the Phillipeaux system in order for new cultures of humankind to flourish. Many missions are created in order to supply planetary lords with WECCs or information in exchange for yet more information on the mystic arts, psychic phenomena, alchemal substances, or illicit drugs and writings. The Copper Legion may also be called upon by Tzeentch and sometimes by Slaanesh for strange confrontations with other warbands or enemies, or to complete unusual quests. The Copper Legion has been contacted recently by Abaddon to participate in his crusade, and Warmaster Mallus is considering the offer. Abaddon is willing to disclose the location of a nearby webway portal and offer his protection if the Legion decides to carry the banner of Chaos to the Imperial forces. |
